At Little Birds, we are inspired by the world renowned Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.

Reggio Emilia pedagogy views young children as individuals who are curious about their world and have the powerful potential to learn from all that surrounds them.

Educational, psychological, and sociological influences are important factors to consider in understanding children and working to stimulate learning in appropriate ways.

Reggio teachers employ strategies such as exposing children to a wide variety of educational opportunities that encourage self-expression, communication, logical thinking, and problem-solving.

Combining Reggio thinking with a forest school approach gives our Little Birds a unique start to learning. Our unique setting takes little birds from the woods, to the beach and into cultural settings like art galleries and theatres.

Children work in a project based approach, where initial interests are extended and expanded to offer authentic, deep learning experiences.

We work closely with the families of our Little Birds, extending our in nursery learning into their homes.

A Typical Day at Little Birds

In the morning, we seperate into three small groups, the Sparrows, which is our youngest group, led by our Under 2s lead, Kelly, with children aged 1 -2 with Charlotte and Emily as pedagogues in this group.

Our Pheasants group pedagogues are Polly and Daniel. and is a mixed age group of 2-3.5 years.

Our Kites group are our oldest group, aged 3-4, with our nursery Manager Stephanie and Molly.

Victoria, our SENco spends time with each group, as do our learners Hannah and Ocean, currently undertaking apprenticeships.

Each morning each group has an excursion, to the forest, beach, river or local environment where the children express

Group excursions  where play is our focus to the forest,, beach and local environment where play based and project learning are our focus.

In the afternoon we come together to enjoy all the benefits of mixed age groups, and the children are offered opportunities to explore their settings, rest, extend their project work, work in small groups with our Atelierista Molly, have music exploration sessions with Emily, and have quiet and restful provocations, all whilst enjoying our beautiful outdoor surroundings.
